First observation of the sigma(*+)(c) baryon and a new measurement of the sigma(*+)(c) mass

Using data recorded with the CLEO II and CLEO II.V detector configurations at the Cornell Electron Storage Rings, we report the first observation and mass measurement of the Sigma(*+)(c) charmed baryon, and an updated measurement of the mass of the Sigma(+)(c) baryon. We find M(Sigma(*+)(c))-M(Lambda(+)(c)) = (231.0+/-1.1+/-2.0) MeV, and M(Sigma(+)(c))-M(Lambda(+)(c)) = (166.4+/-0.2+/-0.3) MeV, where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively.     

Qβ measurements of 158, 159Pm , 159, 161Sm , 160-165Eu , 163Gd and 166Tb using a total absorption BGO detector

Q _β values of the neutron-rich isotopes of ^160-165Eu and ¹⁶³Gd were measured for the first time using a total absorption bismuth germanate (BGO) detector, and previously obtained data on ^{158, 159}Pm , ^{159, 161}Sm and ¹⁶⁶Tb were re-analyzed. These radioactive sources were prepared by an on-line mass separator (Tokai-ISOL) following the ²³⁸U (p,f reaction. The deduced Q _β values are the following: 6085(80)keV for ¹⁵⁸Pm , 3805(65)keV for ¹⁵⁹Sm , 5460(140)keV for ¹⁵⁹Pm , 4705(60)keV for ¹⁶⁰Eu , 5065(130)keV for ¹⁶¹Sm , 3705(60)keV for ¹⁶¹Eu , 5575(60)keV for ¹⁶²Eu , 4690(70)keV for ¹⁶³Eu , 3170(70)keV for ¹⁶³Gd , 6430(70)keV for ¹⁶⁴Eu , 5800(120)keV for ¹⁶⁵Eu , and 4695(70)keV for ¹⁶⁶Tb . Moreover, the deduced mass excesses and two-neutron separation energies ( S _2n values) were compared with those of the atomic mass evaluations and theoretical predictions.

Superconductivity and crystallographic properties of La2 − xMxCuO4 − δ (M = Na, K)

Superconductivity and crystallographic properties of La_{2 − x}M_xCuO_{4 − δ} (M = Na, K) are studied. In the La_{2 − x}M_xCuO_{4 − δ} system, superconductivity is detected for x 0.2. Oxygen content analysis shows that the system has more oxygen vacancies than the La_{2 − x}Sr_xCuO_{4 − δ} system. These oxygen vacancies may reduce the hole concentration, and high Na-doping is needed to produce superconductivity. In the La_{2 − x}K_xCuO_{4 − δ} system, superconductivity is observed for the first time. Resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements show that T_c(onset) is 40 K and the Meissner volume fraction is about 4% for x = 0.7. The system changes from orthorhombic to a tetragonal K₂NiF₄ structure at x ≈ 0.3 and only tetragonal samples show superconductivity.     

Enantioselective desymmetrization of meso-N-(heteroarenesulfonyl)aziridines with TMSN3 catalyzed by chiral Lewis acids

A catalytic enantioselective desymmetrization of meso-N-(heteroarenesulfonyl)aziridines with TMSN₃ using chiral Lewis acids afforded products with high enantioselectivity. As proof of the utility of this procedure, the precursor of selective κ-opioid agonist (1S,2S)-(−)-U-50,488 was synthesized.     

Grignard allylic substitution catalyzed by imidazol-2-ylidene- and imidazol-4-ylidene-magnesium complexes

In the presence of a catalytic amount of 1,2-disubstituted or 1,2,3-trisubstituted imidazolium salts, γ-substituted allyl chlorides reacted with alkyl Grignard reagents to undergo substitution reactions in an S_N2′-selective fashion, where the magnesium ate complexes [(N-heterocyclic carbene-MgR₃)⁻(MgX)⁺] of imidazol-2-ylidenes or imidazol-4-ylidenes, generated in situ, were postulated as the active species. It was observed that the reactions with imidazol-4-ylidene catalysts were faster than those with imidazol-2-ylidenes. Enantioselective catalysis using a chiral imidazolium salt was preliminarily investigated.
